When an exterior keyboard is plugged in (say), F2 on the built-in keyboard will increase brightness; when there isn’t a exterior keyboard, Fn+F2 will increase the brightness.

Karabiner would not assist – as a result of (a) I am unable to swap profiles robotically, and (b) so far as I can inform, the mapping of perform keys is unbiased of the profile.
