After their son Nicky ’22 broke his leg competing for the MIT indoor observe group in 2019, Mark and Teresa Medearis, 3,000 miles away in California, have been heartened by the outpouring of assist from the MIT observe group and the Division of Scholar Life. “We have been embraced by the group once we had this adversity,” Teresa says. “Our eyes have been opened to MIT and the way it cares for its college students.”
Constructing bridges: Mark and Teresa are midway via finishing a present to endow the top teaching place for males’s and girls’s cross-country. Teresa has served as vice chair of the Father or mother Management Circle—on a mission, she says, to “create a bridge for folks from California to MIT”—and is presently on the Company Improvement Committee. The couple can be now contemplating making a scholarship. “Two-thirds of MIT college students are on some type of monetary support,” Teresa says. “That’s the place the necessity is.”
Investing in minds and arms: “MIT adjustments the world in so some ways,” says Mark, a Silicon Valley lawyer. “The very first speech college students hear is: ‘Come and assist us make the world higher.’” Teresa, an engineer, cites the alternatives MIT provides ladies, who make up half the undergraduate enrollment and half the coed athletes within the nation’s largest Division III program. “Giving to MIT is an funding sooner or later,” she says. “There’s no higher payoff.”
